BEWARE The Ides of March

Evan Mackey

We’ve all heard of Friday the 13th slander, and we all joke around about it as a day of bad luck, but did you know that Friday the 13th has a relative? Well, behold, March 15th is also known as the “Ides of March” or “Beware the Ides of March.” Ides in Latin means to divide, and Romans used it to mark full moons. Julius Cesar, the Romans’ leader, was assassinated on this day with a blade getting nonfigurative backstabbed. So if you’re looking for a happy article, click out and find another one of our classmates because this one is full of bad luck.

A cyclone destroyed many German and U.S Warships on March 15th in 1889. This caused over 200 deaths and a significant debt in both militaries. A cyclone damaged six warships; that’s scary. You want to know another of the many things that happened on March 15th. Adolf Hilter ignored the Munich pact, an agreement for Germany, Great Britain, and France that gave Germany a significant advantage. Then they started evading parts of the world that escalated WWll.  The worst blizzard recorded in history swept through North Dakota and killed 71 people in 1941. When you think about it, that isn’t that long ago, but something else happened on March 15th that’s more recent. The Syria Civil war began in 2011, started in riots, and ended up with 400,000 Syrians killed and 6.1 million being internally displaced, Spooky right?

Here are some more spooky “coincidences” to fuel your curiosity even more. At the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina, 1,900 British troops defeated 4,400 American troops. We don’t hear about this in history because of the image of America being the underdog, and yet we somehow lost this fight. If you hated communism, this was the peak of it. Tsar Nicholas ll abdicated the Russian throne, which caused chaos and havoc in 1917. To add to this, Adolf Hitler took away the right for Jews to vote in 1938.

Yet another thing we are familiar with is a disease. Since the world is still under a pandemic, we can remember its older predecessors, including SARS. in 2003, the World Health Organization announced SARS. Do you still think this is all a coincidence?

March 15th is creeping up on us slowly, and I wish everyone the best of luck and especially the one reading this. Get your doomsday bunkers ready and be ready for the zombie apocalypse because 2020/2021 have been bad luck, and it’s going to double on March 15th. I know for sure that I’ll be hiding in my closet wrapped in bubble wrap with my eyes peeled and expecting anything at this point because the odds haven’t been towards us for the past year. I hope nothing too chaotic happens on Ides of March, but a little part of me is suspenseful to see if this is the judgment day of bad luck following the famous Friday the 13th, but I guess at the end, we’ll find out together.
