After a failed attempt at Ted Cruz’s Senate seat and at the 2020 presidential election, Democratic politician Beto O’Rourke joined the 2022 Texas gubernatorial election by tweeting a two-minute video on Monday, November 15, announcing his candidacy.

Despite Gov. Abbott’s prior controversies-his policies regarding COVID-19, his six-week abortion law, his management of the power outage earlier this year, etc.–O’Rourke appears to be facing a tough crowd. Alongside going up against the twice previously elected Greg Abbott, O’Rourke could have some other competition in potential candidate Matthew McConaughey, who has yet to announce his candidacy formally but has been courting the idea.

Beto O’Rourke gained popularity during his bid for the 2018 Senate, but it remains to be seen whether that support will push him into the 2022 Texas governor’s seat.
