Carhartt Facing Backlash on Mandate

Carhartt and CEO Mark Valade have been at the brunt end of some of their customers’ ire after standing behind their company’s vaccine mandate. An email was sent to employees on Friday, January 14, stating, “We, and the medical community, continue to believe vaccines are necessary to ensure a safe working environment for every associate and even perhaps their households…An unvaccinated workforce is both a people and business risk that our company is unwilling to take.”

After the release of the email, the #BoycottCarhartt hashtag gained popularity on Twitter, followed by calls to burn Carhartt gear.

Some employees, it seems, feel betrayed by the mandate, with one, Angela Faulk, saying, “We’ve been loyal, we’ve been faithful, and now all of a sudden it’s like, ‘You’ve got to comply.’” Not many days later, workers in Madisonville, KY, held demonstrations, waving flags, holding signs, etc.

Carhartt is not the only company facing backlash, but the extent of the boycott will unfold in the days ahead.
