Why We Can’t Resist Wordle

Recently, a game has captured the world’s attention, so much so that it was purchased for at least a million dollars. A simple, clever game, currently being played daily by over 2 million people, is called Wordle.

Wordle is a word game created by Josh Wardle, and the cause of its creation is lovely. Wardle made it for his partner, who loved word games. The name, Wordle, is a play on his last name.

It was just two of them playing together for a while, but other people on the internet started to join in overtime. It started with around 90 daily players and has been growing since.

The game is simple but clever. In 6 tries, you must figure out the 5-letter word of the day. The letters included in the word turn yellow, letters in the correct position are green, and letters not in the word turn gray. Players must use deductive reasoning and English skills.

Its rising popularity was why the New York Times bought the game from Josh Wardle for over a million dollars late this January. They were interested in adding this game to their collection of word puzzles but have continued to keep it free and open to the public.

If you haven’t played Wordle yet, you should give it a try. It’s gratifying, both in increasing your word skills and bragging to your friends about the number of attempts you figured out the word. Hopefully, Wordle will continue to stay free and give us frustration and fun for a long time to come.
