Among Us

Game hitting all time popularity

In 2018, the app “Among Us” hit the market.  However, it didn’t become a hit right away.  It took 2 years for it to become the massive hit it is today. The multiplayer game of teamwork and betrayal has reached over 3.8 million active players since its peak in September 2020. The people responsible for this fun pastime is a group of app developers who coined themselves as “Innersloth.” On their website, they describe the game as “One crewmate has been replaced by a parasitic shapeshifter. Their goal is to eliminate the rest of the crew before the ship reaches home. The Impostor will sabotage the ship, sneak through vents, deceive, and frame others to remain anonymous and kill off the crew.”

The game is entertaining and so popular there is even a sort of slang coming from the competition, with different terms like “sus” or “imposs,” which mean suspicious and an imposter. What makes the game fun, however, is the access to customizing your characters. You can choose to make your astronaut any color and accessorize a hat on top of their suit, with many different options including a birthday hat, bat wings, a beanie, a cowboy hat, a flower, an egg cooked over easy, a block of cheese, a flamingo floatie, a green leaf, a balloon, horns, and many more headpieces. For 2.99 extra, you can even purchase an outfit. A single game can host up to ten people, with the highest amount of ‘‘imposters’’ being up to 3. You can choose your settings to control speed, sight, and the number of tasks a player has to complete. With no age limit, the game is enjoyed by everyone and widely liked it too.
